Understanding Twitter: @reply and DM
Friday Apr 27,2012 By · Comments
Twitter is a remarkable tool that enables you to reach a broad variety of people who may be following you, and people who aren’t, because what you Tweet is searchable. There are a few tips and techniques, however, that can make sure you are using Twitter most efficiently.
When you reply to someone, or they reply to you, they use an @ symbol. This is because they are directly referencing you in the tweet. When you tweet, you can expect people to respond to what your saying by replying @yourbusinessname.
If you want to continue that conversation, you can @them as well. However, other people won’t see your reply unless they are following the person you @ replied. One trick is to move the @reply to the end of the tweet or to put a “.” in front of the @ in order to make sure the tweet appears in the regular feed.
The @ reply is different from a direct message because the direct message is private.
It’s important to build quality followers so it is often a good idea to engage them in your topic through @ replies and DM (direct message).
